Background
Given the frequency of natural hazards in Haiti, disaster risk reduction is crucial. However, evidence suggests that many people exposed to prior disasters do not engage in disaster preparedness, even when they receive training and have adequate resources. This may be partially explained by a link between mental health symptoms and preparedness; however, these components are typically not integrated in intervention.
MethodsThe current study assesses effectiveness of an integrated mental health and disaster preparedness intervention. This group-based model was tested in three earthquake-exposed and flood-prone communities (N = 480), across three time points, using a randomized controlled trial design. The 3-day community-based intervention was culturally-adapted, facilitated by trained Haitian lay mental health workers, and focused on enhancing disaster preparedness, reducing mental health symptoms, and fostering community cohesion.
ResultsConsistent with hypotheses, the intervention increased disaster preparedness, reduced symptoms associated with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and functional impairment, and increased peer-based help-giving and help-seeking. Mediation models indicated support for the underlying theoretical model, such that the effect of the intervention on preparedness was mediated by mental health, and that effects on mental health were likewise mediated by preparedness.
ConclusionsThe community-based mental health-integrated disaster preparedness intervention is effective in improving mental health and preparedness among community members in Haiti vulnerable to natural hazards. This brief intervention has the potential to be scaled up for use with other communities vulnerable to earthquakes, seasonal flooding, and other natural hazards.

Let Qd denote the hypercube of dimension d. Given d ⩾ m, a spanning subgraph G of Qd is said to be (Qd, Qm)-saturated if it does not contain Qm as a subgraph but adding any edge of E(Qd)\E(G) creates a copy of Qm in G. Answering a question of Johnson and Pinto [27], we show that for every fixed m ⩾ 2 the minimum number of edges in a (Qd, Qm)-saturated graph is Θ(2d).
We also study weak saturation, which is a form of bootstrap percolation. A spanning subgraph of Qd is said to be weakly (Qd, Qm)-saturated if the edges of E(Qd)\E(G) can be added to G one at a time so that each added edge creates a new copy of Qm. Answering another question of Johnson and Pinto [27], we determine the minimum number of edges in a weakly (Qd, Qm)-saturated graph for all d ⩾ m ⩾ 1. More generally, we determine the minimum number of edges in a subgraph of the d-dimensional grid Pkd which is weakly saturated with respect to ‘axis aligned’ copies of a smaller grid Prm. We also study weak saturation of cycles in the grid.

Objective
Measurements of length at birth, or in the neonatal period, are challenging to obtain and often discounted for lack of validity. Hence, classical ‘under-5’ stunting rates have been derived from surveys on children from 6 to 59 months of age. Guatemala has a high prevalence of stunting (49·8 %), but the age of onset of growth failure is not clearly defined. The objective of the study was to assess length-for-age within the first 1·5 months of life among Guatemalan infants.
DesignAs part of a cross-sectional observational study, supine length was measured in young infants. Mothers’ height was measured. Length-for-age Z-scores (HAZ) were generated and stunting was defined as HAZ <−2 using WHO growth standards.
SettingEight rural, indigenous Mam-Mayan villages (n 200, 100 % of Mayan indigenous origin) and an urban clinic of Quetzaltenango (n 106, 27 % of Mayan indigenous origin), Guatemala.
SubjectsThree hundred and six newborns with a median age of 19 d.
ResultsThe median rural HAZ was −1·56 and prevalence of stunting was 38 %; the respective urban values were −1·41 and 25 %. Linear regression revealed no relationship between infant age and HAZ (r=0·101, r2=0·010, P=0·077). Maternal height explained 3 % of the variability in HAZ (r=0·171, r2=0·029, P=0·003).
ConclusionsStunting must be carried over from in utero growth retardation in short-stature Guatemalan mothers. As linear growth failure in this setting begins in utero, its prevention must be linked to maternal care strategies during gestation, or even before. A focus on maternal nutrition and health in an intergenerational dimension is needed to reduce its prevalence.

The hotel industry utilises the concept of human resource practices system differentiation (HRPSD) by focusing resources on managerial level jobs as a technique of strategic human resource management (SHRM). Despite its use in both practice and the academic literature, research focusing on HRPSD is scarce and detailed analyses of the effects of this practice on employees cannot be found in the academic literature. The objective of this article is to develop a conceptual framework facilitating the examination of how human resource practices systems are differentiated within 5-star hotels, and to identify some direct effects of such systems on employees. The article provides a conceptual framework of SHRM with HRPSD, including the link to human resource intermediate outcomes that have not previously been included in previous research in a hotel industry context.

The notion of the student experience has risen in prominence in response to changing student cohorts, reforms to the higher education system and broader societal and technological trends. Indeed, contemporary notions of the student experience extend well beyond the traditional focus on curriculum, assessment and pedagogy to include the extracurricular activities of students and how universities respond to help students manage their external commitments. Yet, while the term is frequently used, definitions remain elusive. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to deconstruct the student experience by considering the various factors that influence the experience of students in the higher education system. Based on a review of the wide-ranging literature in the field, this article presents a conceptual framework of dimensions that impact on the student experience. The identified dimensions include: institutional factors, student factors, sectoral factors and external factors, each encapsulating a variety of dimensions. The objective of the article is to provide educators in tourism, hospitality and related fields with a contemporary understanding of the key debates and themes related to the student experience in the higher education field.
